A couple of weeks ago I told my husband that I needed to get out of Melbourne and wanted to go for a drive. I picked a spot on the map, Cameron Corner, which is the corner of QLD, NSW and SA.
We decided it was doable in a week and would take us somewhere we hadn’t been before plus would give us some warmth. He organised a week off and on Sunday we left home.
Today, Wednesday, we find ourselves a long way from home at Innamincka, South Australia. It took us three days to get to Cameron Corner and we decided we didn’t want to stay for more than one night so we pushed on to Innamincka.
On the way we saw the Dig Tree which is where Burke and Wills perished on their ill-fated journey in 1861. It’s humbling to think they walked all the way from Melbourne and then up to the Gulf of Carpenteria only to die here.
We are now camped by the Cooper Creek. Turtles swim to the side to say hello. We’re surrounded by birds and have the shade of some trees. I’d happily stay here for a week but with over 1500 km to get home, we will be leaving here soon.
