Australian author Donna M Cameron’s novel Rewilding is a wild ride of a book. Climate catastrophe, corporate crime, running into/from danger.
An exhilarating and unforgettable love song for our world. Heartbroken and in fear for his life, corporate whistle blower, Jagger Eckerman, escapes to hide out in a remote cave, but kick-arse radical, Nia Moretti, is furious a ‘capitalist suit’ has taken over her cave. It is hatred at first sight.
Yet Nia is hiding for reasons of her own, ones that drag Jagger closer to death as they are forced on the run together and he is unwittingly pulled deeper into Nia’s reckless mission to help save the planet. But who can save Jagger from the relentless pursuit of the man who wants him dead?
Both an electrifying cat-and-mouse-chase and an odd couple love story, The Rewilding captures the essence of what it means to be alive today in this cusp of change pulsing with possibilities.
It is a passionate intimation of hope.
I loved Cameron’s book and all it shows about the clash of capitalism and its impact on us and the earth.
As I was reading this, Tropical Cyclone Alfred was bearing down on the south coast of QLD. The story takes us to that exact place that the brunt of the tropical storm now lies. There was a surreal moment of life imitating art, of feeling like I was inhabiting the story, but this is because Cameron is showing us the truth. She holds the lens up to what is going on now.
This book is all I love about fiction. We as the reader can consume it – a great read, a love story, loads of action and reflection – but are reminded of the reality which asks us to take action.
What am I reading now?
Current books open are How Bright Are All Things by Susan Green, and The Wedding Forecast by Nina Kenwood.
What are you reading?
Til next time, happy reading!
